Lent Devotional: James 5:19-20

James 5:19-20 (click here)
My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. (James 5:19-20)

Reflection
There was a knock at the door. We opened it to find a lady standing there with a cute little two-year-old at her side.

“Excuse me… is this your son?”

It was.

Asher had found a way out of the house and just gone exploring wherever he felt like it. I wish I could say this was the first time this has happened, but no… we experienced it with Levi when he was younger, and Asher has accomplished the feat on multiple occasions.

We’ve done everything we can think of to do other than putting a literal tracking device on the kid. We’ve even changed the style of locks we have on the doors… but alas… we have older children who leave the doors unlocked.

Why do we do all of this?

For his safety of course! We are not trying to imprison the kid… we are trying to keep him from getting run over in the road. We are trying to save him from death!

The Word of God, the truth acts much in the same way. It keeps our hearts close to the Lord of life and away from sin that leads to death. The goal of the word is not to imprison us, but to free us from sin/death to joyous life in God’s presence. We are his children and his Word is for our good.

Thus, whenever we see one another wondering from the truth, I pray that we will be like my neighbor! May we seek to bring each other back home to our Father… not because we love getting all judgmental towards one another… but because we love each other!

Do you have a wandering brother or sister who currently needs to be pointed back to Christ? There is no easier time to do this than Easter!

Invite them back to the doorway of the empty tomb to behold the beauty of their resurrected Lord! Invite them back to joyous life!
